How does ultrasound scanning work?
Ultrasound uses a small probe called a transducer, which emits high frequency sound waves. These sound waves bounce off the internal organs, tissues, and water in your body. The echoes are recorded by the ultrasound machine, to create images that you can view on a computer screen. Ultrasound scans are safe and versatile, and use no radiation such as x-rays.
-
Why do I need an Ultrasound scan?
If you're expecting a baby, experiencing pain, or have a concern about your health, an ultrasound scan can help you to find peace of mind.
When it comes to getting a scan, ultrasound is an affordable, quick and safe procedure. The images produced can be used to assess lumps and bumps, joint and muscle injuries, health conditions in the reproductive organs, and problems with the blood vessels. They are also a valuable tool to check your baby's development during pregnancy.
-
What is the difference between an external and internal ultrasound?
An external ultrasound involves a sonographer applying a lubricating gel to the ultrasound probe and moving it across your skin. Internal ultrasound scan probes are smaller in size, and are inserted into your body either as a transvaginal, transrectal, or endoscopic ultrasound. The reason for each scan will depend on the body part and health condition being investigated. While an internal scan might be a little more uncomfortable, it is a quick, non-invasive scan, and negative after-effects are uncommon.
-
How do I prepare for my ultrasound scan?
You'll receive preparation instructions from your selected scanning centre. They might ask you to come to your scan with a full bladder, not eat for a few hours before your scan, or avoid caffeine for several hours prior. When you arrive, you will be asked to remove or adjust your clothing to reveal the skin of the body part being scanned. Certain procedures might require you to change into a hospital gown.
-
How fast are Ultrasound scan results?
Private pregnancy ultrasound results will be given to you on the same day as your appointment. For diagnostic ultrasound scans, a consultant radiologist will examine your images, and compile a report of their findings. Our clinical team will review this and provide a follow-up appointment by phone to discuss the results, before sending a copy to you by email.

-
A key benefit of booking a private ultrasound scan is that you do not need a referral from your regular GP to access our services. There is also no self-referral process. Instead, our in-house medical team will contact you once you have booked and made payment for your scan. Our clinicians will ask you for all of the relevant information they need to compile a referral on your behalf, which is then passed on to your chosen scanning site.
-
Common reasons for choosing to book a private ultrasound include reduced waiting times, quicker availability of results, and the option to choose a scan at a convenient location and time. Private providers can also offer a wider range of scanning techniques, and more time is usually assigned to each patient.
-
Once you have booked and paid for your scan, pregnancy ultrasound bookings will be referred directly to your chosen scanning centre. For diagnostic ultrasound scans, our clinical team will be in touch within 2 working days to arrange your medical assessment. After your consultation, our clinicians will refer your appointment request to our partner scanning centres. The partner centre will then call you to confirm your appointment date and time. It can take up to 7-10 working days to receive your call, but may be sooner depending on your selected scanning centre and requested appointment. Please wait until you have received this call before you make arrangements to travel to the scanning centre.
-
When you arrive for your scan, you will be asked to complete a consent form, and you will be able to discuss what the process of your scan will entail. You usually won't need to change into a gown, but any preparation instructions will be provided by your chosen scanning site in the appointment confirmation email.
-
Depending on the type of ultrasound scan you require, the process can take anywhere from 15-45 minutes.
