What are the different types of pregnancy ultrasound scan?

Ultrasound scans are safe and versatile. They can provide insights into your baby’s size, position, health and gender throughout your pregnancy.

Dating Scan

In this 15-minute scan, your sonographer will measure your baby, assess their heartbeat and development, and estimate how far along you are. You’ll find out the number of babies (e.g. twins), and an estimated due date.

Early Scan

Early scans last 15 minutes, and can confirm a pregnancy, check it is progressing normally, and estimate a due date. It can also assess the causes of pain or bleeding, and rule out ectopic pregnancy and some structural anomalies.

This 30-minute scan gives a detailed analysis of your baby’s bones, heart, brain, spinal cord, face, kidneys and abdomen to look for 11 different conditions. The placenta, umbilical cord and amniotic fluid are also checked.

What is an ultrasound scan?

And how does it work?

Ultrasound is a safe and popular medical imaging method, used to create pictures (sonograms) of your baby, without using radiation.

The ultrasound scanner, also known as a transducer, emits high-frequency sound waves, which bounce off your bodily tissues and the baby. This includes bone, soft tissue and fluid. The echoes created are recorded, and used to generate images on a screen in real-time.

How soon can pregnancy be detected with an ultrasound scan?

We offer private early pregnancy scans from as soon as 6 weeks into your pregnancy. At this time, it is possible for a sonographer to confirm your pregnancy, and check whether it is viable. Most early pregnancies do not incur any complications, but an early scan can check for ectopic pregnancy, rule out any major abnormalities or risks, and visualise a heartbeat.

How long do ultrasound scans take?

Depending on the type of scan you have selected, the appointment can range from 15-40 minutes. We also ask patients to arrive at their chosen scanning centre 15 minutes before the scan is due to start. After your scan, you might be asked to wait while your images and any written information is compiled for you to take away with you.
