A growth ultrasound scan takes around 15 minutes, and can be carried out from around halfway through your pregnancy (22 weeks).
A growth scan assesses your baby’s measurements, e.g. weight, head circumference, femur length and placental location. After 24 weeks the umbilical blood flow is also checked.
During the scan, your sonographer will also assess your baby’s heartbeat, overall development, and any major physical abnormalities.
At this stage in your pregnancy, you may be able to find out your baby’s gender, if you’d like to.
A growth scan offers the opportunity to check in on your baby, and make sure they’re growing and developing as expected.
Ultrasound is a safe and popular medical imaging method, which uses high-frequency sound waves to create pictures (sonograms) of your baby, without using radiation. It can give key insights into your baby’s health and development throughout pregnancy.
Growth ultrasound scans allow sonographers to check your baby’s development, wellbeing and size. You’ll be able to see the images on a screen as they are captured, and the room may be slightly darkened to give you a better view.
During the scan, you’ll lie on a flat bed, and will be asked to lift your top to expose the skin of your abdomen. Ultrasound gel will be applied to your skin, to help your sonographer move the scanning probe smoothly across your abdomen to get different views of the baby in your womb.
A growth scan lasts around 15 minutes. We ask you to arrive 15 minutes early, and you might be required to wait on-site after your appointment while your results and images are prepared. Drinking 2 or three glasses of water about an hour before your scan helps to fill your bladder and may help improve the scan imaging.
