While this can make the scan seem daunting, the results can help you access support, and plan the appropriate care for the rest of your pregnancy, birth, and beyond.

What can a pregnancy anomaly scan show?

An anomaly ultrasound scan can identify spinal, skull and limb abnormalities, abdominal wall defects, heart problems, and some subtle markers for some genetic conditions.

Bones, face and organs

Anomaly scans will look for developmental anomalies in the head, brain, face, spine, limbs, lungs, heart, bowels, kidneys, and bladder.

Placenta, umbilical cord and amniotic fluid

The scan will show the fluid around the baby, the umbilical cord, and placenta, to check for conditions such as a low-lying placenta.

Gender (optional)

Your sonographer might be able to identify your baby’s gender, depending on their position. It’s your choice whether you’d like to find out.

Chromosomal and physical anomalies

The scan can detect physical anomalies such as cleft lip, spina bifida, and heart abnormalities, and whether or not there is an increased risk of genetic conditions, e.g. Edward syndrome or Patau syndrome.

What is an ultrasound scan?

And how does it work?

Ultrasound is a safe scanning method to generate pictures of your baby during pregnancy. It can give key insights into your baby’s health and development.

During an anomaly scan, the ultrasound scanning probe (also known as a transducer) will be moved across the skin of your abdomen. The high-frequency sound waves generated by the transducer echo off of your bodily tissues and the baby. The echoes are recorded, and used to generate images on a screen in real-time.

What happens at an anomaly scan?

An anomaly scan is a detailed assessment of your baby, which means it can take around 20-30 minutes. It’s normal if the scanning room is dimly lit to make the scan images clearer, or if your sonographer stays quiet during the scan - this is just so that they can stay focussed on the assessment.

What happens if an anomaly is discovered?

You’ll receive your results on the same day, at the time of your scan. Most anomaly scans show a healthy, normally developing baby. However, if your scan has discovered an anomaly, the expert patient care staff at our partner scanning centres will be on-hand to support you and give advice about what to do next.
