Preparation for MRI scans
Getting ready for an MRI scan rarely involves much. You may sometimes be asked to stop eating and drinking for a set time beforehand. Choose comfortable clothes that are free of metal fastenings, whether buttons, toggles or zips. You may also be asked to change into a gown. Strong magnets inside the scanner interact with metal, so glasses, jewellery, watches, belts, wallets, phones and other personal items have to come off or be set aside. Patients with a pacemaker or another implanted medical device might need further preparation to stay safe. Instructions covering all of this are provided before your scan. If your scan uses contrast, you'll be asked for recent blood test results showing your kidney function. It's your kidneys that clear the gadolinium contrast agent once the scan is over.
The procedure
Trained radiographers run every MRI scan, and they'll start by explaining exactly what will happen. You lie still on a flat bed that carries you in and out of the doughnut-shaped scanner. Scanning time runs from 15 to 90 minutes, according to the area of your body involved. Contrast, when it's needed, is given through an IV. The scanner does make loud noises. Music is usually available to help pass the time, though, and the radiographers speak to you through headphones throughout.
How long does it take?
Plan for an MRI scan to take between 15 and 90 minutes. How long yours takes depends on the number of body areas involved and on whether you need contrast. Your clinician and chosen imaging centre will confirm the expected time with you.
