Preparation For Echocardiogram Scans

We offer transthoracic (external) echocardiogram scans, which only require minimal preparations. You'll need to undress on your top half, lie flat on an examination couch, and have an ultrasound probe gently moved across your chest. For added comfort, a hospital gown will usually be provided so that you can cover up before and after your scan.

The Procedure

An echocardiogram is a specialised ultrasound scan of the heart. You'll be asked to undress above the waist and lie on your side on a couch or flat bed. Sticky electrodes will be placed on your chest, and a cool gel will be applied to your skin. An ultrasound probe (called a transducer) will be moved across the skin of your chest to examine your heart. The probe emits high-frequency sound waves that travel through your chest and bounce off the structures of your heart. The transducer captures these echoes and transforms them into detailed images of your heart on a screen. The scan is typically performed by a sonographer, cardiac physiologist, or cardiologist.

How Long Does It Take?

The whole echocardiogram procedure usually takes between 20-30 minutes to complete. It should not cause you any discomfort and you can return to your day as normal afterwards.

When You Will Receive Results

Your echocardiogram results will be compiled by the expert team at your selected scanning centre. They'll share the results with our clinical team who will call you to share the findings. You'll be able to ask any questions and discuss the next steps. This call usually happens within 7-10 working days of your scan, but can be much faster - it varies from site to site.

Frequently asked questions

See a few of our most frequent asks about booking an Echocardiogram Scan. Have more questions? We'd love to help.

Are echocardiograms safe?

There's no radiation involved in an echocardiogram. Instead, it's a type of ultrasound scan, which means it uses high-frequency sound waves to create images. This makes echocardiogram scanning a generally safe and straightforward procedure.

However, some types of echocardiograms involve additional substances, such as contrast agents to define the images or medication to 'stress' the heart or make it work harder for the duration of the scan. These can have some side effects, which will be discussed with you in detail prior to the scan.

Also, a type of internal echocardiogram called a transesophageal echocardiogram (TOE) involves inserting an ultrasound probe via the oesophagus to view different angles of your heart. This can also have some complications in rare cases, which would also be discussed with you beforehand.
