Preparation For Prostate Scans

You can eat, drink, and take medication as usual before your scan, unless advised otherwise. If you're having a contrast-enhanced scan, you'll need to provide recent blood test results confirming your kidney function prior to your scan. This is to make sure it is safe for you to have the injection, as your kidneys help to remove the substance from your body afterwards. You'll need to remove jewellery, glasses, belts and any other metal items before your scan, as the magnets in the scanner can interact with them. If you have an implanted medical device such as a pacemaker, specific advice will be given to you in advance of your scan to ensure that it is safe for you to undergo.

The Procedure

Your radiographer will explain the procedure before it starts. You'll be asked to lie down on a flat bed, which moves in and out of the cylindrical MRI scanner. You'll need to lie still for the duration of the scan. You might be given a pillow for your comfort, as well as headphones because the scanning machine can be quite noisy. If you're having a prostate MRI scan with contrast (often called a mpMRI), you'll be given a contrast injection via IV during the scan. Your radiographer will leave the room during the procedure, but they'll speak to you via an intercom system and explain when the contrast injection will happen.

How Long Does It Take?

A standard prostate MRI scan can take around 30 minutes to complete. However, if you are having a more advanced multiparametric MRI scan (mpMRI), it can last for 60 minutes or more. This is because it involves the use of a contrast dye to enhance the images. In some cases, you might also need to remain in the clinic for a short while after your scan to make sure there are no side-effects from the dye.

When You Will Receive Results

Prostate MRI scan results are shared within 7-10 working days of your scan. This gives time for your radiologist to write a report of their findings and share it with our clinicians, who will review the outcomes and call you to discuss them. The timeframe can vary from site to site, with many turning reports around much sooner.
