Preparation For Mammogram Scans

For 48 hours before your mammogram, you should avoid using spray deodorant or talcum powder as this can remain on the skin and show up on your mammogram. You can eat, drink, and take your medications as normal in the run up to your scan. On the day of your appointment, please don't apply makeup or lotions to the base of your neck or on your chest, as they can also appear in the images depending on the ingredients. During your mammogram screening, you’ll be asked to undress on your top half. To make this easier and more comfortable, we recommend wearing a separate top and bottoms rather than a dress or jumpsuit.

The Procedure

During your mammogram, you'll visit the facility you selected, where a mammographer will guide you through the process. You'll be asked to undress from the waist up, and remove your bra and possibly any jewellery near the chest area. One breast at a time will be positioned on the mammogram machine, and a clear plate will compress the tissue briefly to capture images. While this may feel slightly uncomfortable, it’s usually quick and not painful. Multiple images will be taken from different angles, including the surrounding tissue, and you’ll need to stay still for a few seconds for each one.

How Long Does It Take?

A mammogram appointment generally lasts around 30 minutes. This includes the time needed to position you correctly and capture detailed images for accurate breast health assessments.

When You Will Receive Results

Mammogram results will be sent to you directly from the scanning centre. If any urgent anomalies are found, they will call you and also ensure you receive the timely and correct onward care. This could be via your GP or via a private clinic. Normal results will be shared in the format of a report, sent to you via email or post after your scan.

Frequently asked questions

See a few of our most frequent asks about booking a Mammogram Scan. Have more questions? We'd love to help.

Can I book a mammogram if I have symptoms of breast cancer?

Our mammograms are designed for asymptomatic screening rather than for diagnosing breast cancer. This means they check seemingly normal, healthy breast tissue for any early signs of anomalies, to monitor changes and maximise the options for potential treatment if cancer is found.

If you have noticed any symptoms of breast cancer, such as a lump or change in breast appearance, please make an appointment with your GP as soon as possible rather than booking a screening scan with us.
