Preparation For MRI Scans

MRI scans generally require minimal preparation. In some cases, you might be asked not to eat or drink (fast) for some time before your scan. You'll need to wear soft, comfortable clothing with no metal fastenings such as buttons, toggles or zips. You might be asked to change into a hospital gown. This is because the strong magnets in an MRI scanner can interact with metal objects, so you'll also need to remove glasses, jewellery, watches, belts, wallets, phones and other personal items. If you have an implanted medical device such as a pacemaker, additional preparation may be required for your safety. All instructions will be provided before your scan. For MRI scans with contrast, you'll be asked to provide recent blood test results that show your kidney function. This is because your kidneys help get rid of the gadolinium contrast agent after your scan.

The Procedure

MRI scans are carried out by highly trained technicians called radiographers. They will explain what will happen during the test before it starts. During the scan, you’ll lie still on a flat bed that moves in and out of the doughnut-shaped scanner. The scan can take 15 to 90 minutes, depending on the area being scanned. If contrast is needed, it’ll be given via an IV. The scanner is noisy, but you’ll usually be able to listen to music, and the radiographers will talk to you through headphones throughout the scan.

How Long Does It Take?

MRI scans can take anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour, depending on how many body areas are being scanned and whether contrast injections are needed. Your healthcare provider will guide you on the expected duration for your specific scan.

When You Will Receive Results

If you've had an MRI scan with us in Sheffield or the surrounding areas, you can expect to receive your results within 7-10 working days of your scan. This gives time for your radiologist to write a report of their findings and share it with our clinicians, who will review the outcomes and call you to discuss them. The timeframe can vary from site to site, with many turning reports around much sooner than the given window.
