Preparation For Pregnancy Scans

Pregnancy ultrasound scans are quick and safe. They don't involve many prior preparations. Depending on the stage of your pregnancy, you might be asked to come to your appointment with a full bladder, e.g. by drinking 1-2 pints of water an hour before your scan and waiting until the scan is complete before going to the bathroom. You'll be told if this is required in advance. We also recommend wearing comfortable clothing, ideally with a separate top and bottoms so that you can lift your shirt and lower your waistband to expose your abdomen for the scan.

The Procedure

During the scan, you’ll lie on a flat bed, and will be asked to lift your top to expose the skin of your abdomen. A cool gel will be applied to your skin. This helps your sonographer to move the scanning probe (transducer) smoothly across your skin. The gel also improves the contact between the transducer and your skin to produce the best quality images. The transducer emits high-frequency sound waves and records how they echo back from the tissues within your abdomen. This information is translated into images on a computer screen. The screen might be switched off if you don't want to know the gender of your baby, and the sonographer might pause the images to look closely at your baby's anatomy.

How Long Does It Take?

Pregnancy ultrasound scans typically take between 15 and 30 minutes, depending on the purpose of the scan and the stage of pregnancy.

When You Will Receive Results

Pregnancy scan results are provided on-site at the time of your scan. This is the case for all of our pregnancy scanning providers, whether they're based in Sheffield or elsewhere in the UK.

Frequently asked questions

See a few of our most frequent asks about booking a Pregnancy Scans. Have more questions? We'd love to help.

How early can I have a private pregnancy scan?

We can provide ultrasound scans as early as 6 weeks into your pregnancy. Usually, the first pregnancy scan provided on the NHS is at 10-14 weeks.

Is a pregnancy scan safe for the unborn baby?

Yes - pregnancy scans use ultrasound to create images, which is radiation-free and safe for both mother and baby. High-frequency sound waves inaudible to the human ear are emitted from a special probe called a transducer. It records how the sound waves bounce back, or 'echo', and creates an image on a computer screen. The scan is quick, safe and affordable.
